Ava Tanner Across America!
This October, to help celebrate National Community Planning Month, WPD is sending 100 copies of the children's book Ava Tanner the City Planner to homes, schools, libraries, community centers, afterschool programs, camps, and more, across the country, to introduce more girls and young women to the planning profession. We will ask book recipients to email or post a picture of them with the book and share their location on social media and to track Ava's adventures across America! Click the link below to request a book for yourself, for a friend, or for a school, library, or other community group!
Ava Tanner The City Planner introduces elementary audiences to some of the basic concepts (and the fundamentally hopeful spirit) of city planning—both as a possible future career and as a calling for all engaged citizens. The text is ideal for reading aloud in a classroom setting, and includes a glossary and open-ended follow-up activity.

Confessions of a Recovering Engineer Session 1 (Intro to Chap. 6)
Join WPD's free Virtual Book Club and participate in bimonthly real-time discussions on Zoom, with around 20-30 participants, and flexible asynchronous discussions. Come for one or all sessions - there is no obligation to participate in every discussion. It's completely up to you. Members also recommend books and vote on future books for the club to read. All are welcome and Book Club is free to join!
We are currently reading Confessions of a Recovering Engineer by Strong Towns founder and president Charles Marohn. Drawing on his decades of experience as a professional engineer and planner, he explains why the conventional approach to traffic engineering is making people less safe, bankrupting towns and cities, destroying the fabric of communities, and actually worsening the problems (like congestion) engineers set out to solve.
