National Community Planning Month

Planners work to improve the well-being of all people living in our communities by taking a comprehensive perspective. This approach leads to safer, resilient, more equitable, and more prosperous communities. We celebrate the role that planning plays in creating great communities in October with National Community Planning Month.

"Ava Tanner the City Planner" Across America 2025

Help the Women & Planning Division celebrate National Community Planning Month!

Ava-Update

This October, we are sending 100 copies of the children's book Ava Tanner the City Planner to schools, libraries, community centers, afterschool programs, camps, and more, across the country, to introduce more girls and young women to the planning profession.

We need YOUR recommendations for book recipients! WPD will send up to 100 donated copies of Ava Tanner to your suggested recipient. We will ask book recipients to email or post a picture of them with the book and share their location on social media to help celebrate National Community Planning Month and to track Ava's adventures across America!

Ava Tanner The City Planner introduces elementary audiences to some of the basic concepts (and the fundamentally hopeful spirit) of City Planning—both as a possible future career and as a calling for all engaged citizens. The text is ideal for reading aloud in a classroom setting, and includes a glossary and open-ended follow-up activity.
